Dehradun is making a bigger play in the world of winter sports. The Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2026 began on August 17 at Maharana Pratap Sports Complex, bringing athletes, coaches and officials from India and other countries to the city.
The four-day event, running until August 20, is more than an international sporting competition. It puts Dehradun on the map as Uttarakhand pushes to become a destination for winter sports training and international competitions.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the event would strengthen the state's identity as a winter and ice-sports destination. The government is also working on a broader sports ecosystem, including 23 proposed sports academies across eight cities and Uttarakhand's first sports university in Haldwani.
For Dehradun, the event offers a glimpse of a different sporting future—one where the city hosts international athletes rather than simply sending local talent out to compete.
