Dehradun commuters and Mussoorie-bound travellers may soon breathe a sigh of relief. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved a ₹3,500 crore highway project that will directly connect Dehradun to Mussoorie, reducing the travel time between the two hill towns from nearly 90 minutes to just 30 minutes.
The proposed 42-km two-lane highway will start at Jhajhra in Dehradun and extend to Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie. Once completed, it will serve as a faster, more efficient alternative to the existing 34-km hill road, which often faces heavy congestion, especially on weekends and during tourist seasons.
What sets this project apart is the construction of two major tunnels, designed to navigate the region’s challenging Himalayan terrain. The first tunnel, measuring 2.9 km, will pass beneath the George Everest peak, while the second 2-km tunnel will be built near the Everest House stretch. These tunnels will help vehicles bypass steep slopes, sharp curves and landslide-prone sections that currently slow down traffic.
Apart from easing travel for daily commuters, the new highway is expected to significantly improve tourist movement, reduce traffic pressure on Mussoorie Road, and enhance overall road safety. For Dehradun residents, this could mean smoother drives, better connectivity, and a big boost to regional tourism and development.
Once work begins, the Dehradun–Mussoorie journey is set to become quicker, safer and far less stressful — a long-awaited upgrade for one of Uttarakhand’s busiest routes.
