For anyone living in Dehradun, traffic has become an unavoidable part of daily life. A new ₹716 crore Dehradun bypass project could bring some much-needed relief.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is building a 12-km greenfield, four-lane, access-controlled bypass from Jhajhra to the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor near Asharori Check Post. The project is targeted for completion by April 2027.
The bypass is designed to take non-destination and heavy traffic away from the city's core. It will provide an alternate route towards Selaqui, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur and Paonta Sahib, while strengthening connectivity with Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
For Delhi-NCR travellers, the project could make journeys towards Dehradun and Mussoorie smoother, as traffic entering the city can be avoided. The bypass is also expected to reduce congestion and vehicular pollution in Dehradun.
The bypass adds to Uttarakhand's growing road infrastructure network after the opening of the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, which has cut Delhi-Dehradun travel time to around 2.5 hours.
For Dehradun residents, the hope is straightforward: less traffic inside the city, smoother intercity travel and better regional connectivity.
