In a significant development that could reshape the future of tourism and wellness in Uttarakhand, the state government is preparing to establish two large-scale Spiritual Economic Zones (SEZs)—one in Garhwal and one in Kumaon. For residents of Dehradun, this marks the beginning of a major boost in spiritual tourism, wellness tourism, cultural tourism and economic opportunities across the region.
As Dehradun continues to grow as a gateway to the Himalayas, these upcoming Spiritual SEZs are expected to draw global attention to the state's unique spiritual identity. The zones will bring together yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, naturopathy, traditional healing, local handicrafts, mountain products, cultural festivals and wellness retreats, creating a vibrant ecosystem designed to attract both domestic and international travellers.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to begin work on the new Spiritual Economic Zones within this financial year. He also announced that one village in each of Uttarakhand’s 95 blocks will be developed as a “spiritual village,” showcasing the state’s culture, cuisine, wellness practices and rural traditions—directly benefiting blocks connected to Dehradun district.
The plan gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Foundation Day visit to Dehradun on November 9, referred to Uttarakhand as “the heartbeat of India’s spiritual life” and stated that the state could become “the spiritual capital of the world.” His message strongly resonated in Dehradun, already a gateway to Rishikesh, Haridwar and major spiritual centres.
Following this, CM Dhami held a high-level meeting with senior officials and tourism minister Satpal Maharaj to fast-track the blueprint for the two Spiritual Economic Zones. The SEZs will integrate yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, naturopathy and cultural experiences with modern tourism facilities.
Tourism secretary Dhiraj Garbyal said the state will improve infrastructure, accommodation, transport and safety to support the upcoming zones. For Dehradun, this means improved connectivity, increased visitors, new job opportunities, and greater opportunities for wellness practitioners and local artisans.
With two Spiritual Economic Zones and 95 spiritual villages coming up, Dehradun’s role as a hub for spiritual, cultural and wellness tourism is set to grow significantly—marking the start of a new chapter in the city’s development.
