Dehradun witnessed the beginning of a unique spiritual journey as a special train to Veraval (Somnath) was flagged off from Harrawala Railway Station for the Somnath Swabhiman Parv. Carrying nearly 700 devotees, the six-day pilgrimage brings together women from Self-Help Groups, beneficiaries of government welfare schemes, members of the saint community, and representatives of social organisations from across Uttarakhand.
More than just a religious tour, the initiative reflects the state's growing emphasis on spiritual tourism and cultural connectivity. By organising a dedicated pilgrimage train, the Uttarakhand government aims to make visits to one of India's most revered Jyotirlinga shrines more accessible while encouraging people to reconnect with the country's rich spiritual traditions.
The pilgrimage also aligns with Uttarakhand's broader efforts to strengthen its identity as Devbhoomi and position itself as a leading destination for faith-based tourism. Alongside initiatives such as the development of temple circuits under Kedarkhand and Manaskhand, the state continues to invest in projects that promote its religious and cultural heritage.
For residents of Dehradun, the Somnath special train represents another step towards expanding organised pilgrimage experiences while reinforcing the city's role as a gateway to Uttarakhand's evolving spiritual tourism landscape.
