Dehradun’s iconic Gandhi Park has reopened after a major redevelopment aimed at making the space greener, more engaging and environmentally conscious for visitors. The upgraded park was inaugurated by Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal following improvements carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun.
Spread across nearly 58,952 square metres in the heart of the city, the redevelopment focuses on restoring the landscape while improving the park’s infrastructure. Officials say the project aims to strengthen Gandhi Park’s identity as a sustainable public space for residents and tourists.
One of the highlights of the upgrade is the addition of eco-themed installations inspired by the “Save Trees Movement.” These displays draw inspiration from the legacy of environmental activist Gaura Devi and the historic Chipko Movement, reminding visitors of Uttarakhand’s deep connection with environmental conservation.
The park now features several new visitor-friendly additions, including a central pedestrian avenue, bamboo landscape structures, decorative lighting and a redesigned entrance gate. Authorities have also introduced pergolas, selfie points and artistic installations created under the “waste-to-wonder” concept, which promote recycling and environmental awareness while enhancing the park’s visual appeal.
Along with these features, land levelling and new plantation drives have been carried out to expand green zones and strengthen the park’s ecological character.
With these improvements, Gandhi Park is expected to become an even more vibrant public gathering space for walks, leisure and community activities in Dehradun.
