If you’re planning a road trip to Uttarakhand this winter, be it for a spiritual getaway in Rishikesh, a mountain escape to Dehradun, or chai with a view in Nainital, you might want to keep a few extra bucks handy. Starting December 2025, the state is introducing a ‘Green Tax’ on vehicles entering from outside Uttarakhand.
So, what exactly is this Green Tax?
Think of it as a small eco-contribution, your way of saying thank you to the Himalayas for the fresh air and Instagram-worthy views. The state government plans to collect a tiny fee from vehicles registered outside Uttarakhand, using the funds to maintain clean roads, control pollution, and protect the state’s delicate mountain environment.
The fee won’t burn a hole in your wallet either:
- Cars around ₹80
- Goods vehicles ₹250 and above
- Buses: ₹140
Forget the hassle of paying cash at checkposts—this one’s smart and seamless. Automatic cameras will read your number plate and deduct the amount directly through your FASTag. So, no queues, no arguments, no searching for ₹10 change.
The Green Tax is the state’s way of encouraging cleaner travel and using the money to improve its infrastructure—think better roads, greener public spaces, and cleaner air.
