Nestled in the heart of Dehradun’s bustling cityscape lies the Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara Ashram, one of the most revered and historically significant landmarks in the region. Built in the 17th century, this magnificent gurudwara is not just a spiritual hub but also a symbol of the city’s deep-rooted cultural heritage.

The gurudwara traces its origins to Guru Ram Rai, the eldest son of the seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai Ji. Invited by the then ruler of Garhwal, Raja Fateh Shah, Guru Ram Rai chose Dehradun as the seat of his spiritual mission, eventually laying the foundation of the city itself. The ashram became a centre for preaching, community service, and education — a tradition that continues even today.

One of the biggest highlights is the Jhanda Mela, held every year in March to commemorate Guru Ram Rai’s arrival in Dehradun. Devotees from across the country gather for the ceremonial hoisting of a tall religious flag (Jhanda Sahib), followed by vibrant processions, kirtan, and community feasts. This grand fair is deeply intertwined with Dehradun’s cultural identity.

The gurudwara is not only a place of worship but also a hub for seva (selfless service). Visitors can partake in the community kitchen (langar), which serves free vegetarian meals to hundreds of devotees daily. The ashram also organizes religious discourses, community welfare programs, and cultural activities, keeping alive the tradition of service and unity.
