Dehradun residents may soon experience some relief from growing traffic and parking chaos. The Uttarakhand government is developing 11 new parking facilities across the state with a combined capacity of 1,082 vehicles, and nearly 80% of the construction work is already complete.

Officials have indicated that the remaining work is expected to be finished within the next six months, ahead of the upcoming travel season.

Focus on Tourist & High-Traffic Cities

The move follows a detailed review conducted in 2024, during which proposals were invited for parking facilities at 195 locations across Uttarakhand. Cities with heavy tourist footfall such as Dehradun and Nainital were given priority.

The housing department approved detailed project reports (DPRs) for parking at 114 locations, allocating the required budget to fast-track development.

What Has Been Completed So Far?

  • Phase 1: Parking facilities at 54 locations have already been developed, creating space for 3,244 vehicles. These sites are operational.

  • Phase 2: Construction is underway at 11 additional locations, adding capacity for 1,082 vehicles.

  • Additionally, development authorities are independently building parking at 11 more locations, which will accommodate 359 vehicles.

Housing secretary R Rajesh Kumar has directed authorities to speed up work and ensure basic amenities such as lighting, toilets, and cleanliness are in place before opening.

Government’s Stand

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted that crores of pilgrims and tourists visit Uttarakhand every year. With improved road connectivity, more travellers are arriving in private vehicles, increasing pressure on urban infrastructure — especially in cities like Dehradun.

Over the past four years, the state government has focused on strengthening parking infrastructure to manage rising demand and reduce congestion.

What It Means for Dehradun

For Dehradun residents, the new facilities could ease parking shortages in busy commercial and tourist areas. With travel season approaching, timely completion will be crucial to managing traffic flow more effectively.

If executed as planned, these new parking projects could offer long-awaited breathing space to the city’s crowded roads.
