For over 120 years, the Aadhat Bazaar (also called Arhat Bazaar) in Dehradun has been more than just a wholesale trading hub – it has been part of the city’s very heartbeat. The bustling stretch between Saharanpur Chowk and Tehsil Chowk, packed with shops, handcarts, traders, and age-old traditions, has long been the go-to for grains, pulses, spices, and agricultural produce.
But the very charm of the old bazaar had also become a challenge. Narrow roads, unending traffic jams, and no scope for expansion meant something had to change. And now, after decades of discussion, Dehradun’s iconic market is being shifted to a brand-new, modern complex.
The new Aadhat Bazaar will rise on 109 bighas (about 10 hectares) of MDDA land behind Patel Nagar Police Station, near Brahmanwala and Haridwar Bypass. This location was chosen for its excellent connectivity to highways, ensuring easier access for traders and transporters without choking the city’s core. In a landmark decision, the Uttarakhand Cabinet approved 7.749 hectares of free land for traders — a gesture worth nearly ₹223 crore — ensuring the transition doesn’t financially cripple the community.
The upcoming market will not just be a relocation — it will be a state-of-the-art wholesale hub designed for efficiency and comfort.
Dehradun is about to witness a transformation where a century-old identity will step into a modern, planned future. The challenge now is to ensure that the soul of Aadhat Bazaar — its bustling community spirit — survives this big move.
