
Dehradun has come alive with energy as the 38th National Games, one of India’s largest multi-sport events, takes centerstage in Uttarakhand. With the majestic Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun hosting the grand opening ceremony on January 28, the state is set to witness a celebration of athleticism, culture and unity like never before.
The Games, spanning from January 26 to February 14, mark a milestone for Uttarakhand, as events are being hosted in seven cities across the state, with Dehradun serving as the hub.
The prime minister graced the opening ceremony, addressing 10,000 athletes, coaches, and officials who have gathered to compete for glory across 32 sports disciplines.
“It is a beautiful portrait of ‘Ek Bharat, Sreshth Bharat'."
Commenting on the Games, PM Narendra Modi said at the opening ceremony.
The Games began with triathlon events on January 26, while kho kho and basketball tipped off on January 28. Fans are eagerly awaiting boxing matches starting January 31, with Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain headlining the competition. Other stars like shuttler Lakshya Sen, shooters Swapnil Kusale and Sarabjot Singh and runner Ankita Dhyani will be competing for gold among 450 medal events.
Additionally, four unique demonstration sports — mallakhamb, kalarippayattu, rafting, and yogasana — have been added to showcase India’s rich sporting traditions.
