On Tuesday, during the 27th foundation day of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC), Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, laid the foundation stones for a slew of civic projects collectively worth around ₹ 46 crore.

What the Projects Cover

  • The planned works include development of footpaths, road-side beautification and landscaping along key city corridors — for example from Kirsali Chowk to Sahastradhara crossing (on Canal Road), from Luxuria Farms to Ajanta Hotel, from Clock Tower to RTO Chowk and Yamuna Colony, among others.

  • A notable project is a gas-operated animal crematorium to be constructed in Mothrowala — a long-awaited facility for humane and environmentally safer handling of animal carcasses.

  • Improvements also include parks and green spaces, mechanised waste-transfer arrangements, and smart parking infrastructure. A new park on IT Park Road and a mechanised smart parking facility on Rajpur Road were inaugurated as part of the celebrations.

Broader Civic Vision: Cleanliness, Sustainability, Traffic Relief

Speaking at the function, CM Dhami outlined an ambitious vision: over the years, DMC has improved waste management and sanitation — aligning with the Swachh Bharat Mission — and leveraged central/state schemes like Smart Cities Mission, PM Awas Yojana and AMRUT Mission to upgrade urban amenities.

He also flagged future plans to deal with persistent traffic and parking issues, including proposals to build elevated roads over the Rispana River and Bindal River — a move that could significantly ease congestion in the valley city.

Meanwhile, DMC has already added 35 parks across the city to bolster green cover and public recreation spaces.

What It Means for Dehradun Residents

For citizens of Dehradun, these initiatives — if executed properly — promise more walkable roads, better urban greenery, safer and more dignified facilities for animal cremation, and reduced traffic congestion in the future. The focus on sanitation, waste management, and public amenities also signals a push toward a cleaner, greener, and more organised urban environment.

At the same time, the success of these plans will depend on timely execution, regular maintenance, and consistent civic oversight — aspects that residents and civic-watch groups should keep a close eye on.
