One of the most significant religious and cultural events in Uttarakhand, the annual Jhanda Mela, has begun in Dehradun. The historic fair started on March 8, 2026, and will continue until March 27, 2026, drawing lakhs of devotees and visitors from across India and abroad.
The celebrations are held at the revered Darbar Sahib, a major spiritual center associated with the followers of Guru Ram Rai. The festival marks the hoisting of a ceremonial flag known as the “Jhanda,” symbolizing faith, devotion, and centuries-old traditions.
This year’s highlight was the installation of a 94-foot-high flagstaff, which was ceremonially hoisted at Darbar Sahib amid chants, prayers, and traditional rituals. The moment marked the official beginning of the fair and was witnessed by thousands of devotees gathered at the shrine.
About Jhanda Mela:
The Jhanda Mela is not only a religious gathering but also an important cultural event for the region. During the nearly three-week-long fair, the area around Darbar Sahib transforms into a vibrant marketplace filled with stalls selling traditional sweets, local handicrafts, toys, clothes, and festive food. Cultural performances, devotional music, and community gatherings add to the festive spirit.
Every year, millions of devotees visit Dehradun during the fair to seek blessings and participate in the celebrations. The event also gives a boost to the local economy as hotels, markets, and transport services see a surge in visitors.
With elaborate arrangements by local authorities for crowd management, security, and facilities for pilgrims, Jhanda Mela 2026 is expected to witness another massive turnout, continuing the centuries-old tradition that makes it one of Dehradun’s most iconic spiritual gatherings.
